After three rounds of counselling, some medical seats still go unfilled because candidates don't join, resign, or never receive a seat. The NEET UG 2026 stray vacancy round exists to fill them. For many aspirants it is the last real chance at an MBBS, BDS, or B.Sc. Nursing seat this admission cycle.
Finally the MCC has conducted the stray vacancy round for remaining seats of MBBS, BDS, and B.Sc. Nursing. It follows Rounds 1, 2 and 3, and is held online. Seats come back into the pool when allotted candidates do not report, when admissions are cancelled, or when seats were added or released late in the process.
The most important feature of this round is that it fills only vacant seats and offers no upgradation. Once you are allotted a seat here, that is generally your final seat.
Publishers have reported slightly different dates, so treat any date as provisional until you confirm it on the official site. One breakdown lists stray vacancy registration from 28 September to 30 September 2026. The same source places the seat allotment result on 3 October 2026, with admission and reporting from 4 to 10 October 2026. MCC has also said it will share the data of allotted candidates on 3 October 2026. Because MCC can revise its schedule, always check mcc.nic.in for the latest notice.
Eligibility is wider than many students assume, but it has limits. In general, you can take part if you:
Have qualified NEET UG 2026 and hold a valid rank.
Registered for MCC counselling earlier in the cycle and met the MCC eligibility criteria.
Did not get a seat in earlier rounds, or are otherwise eligible under the round's rules.
Resigned or did not join an earlier seat, provided you are not barred by MCC's exit and forfeiture rules.
Candidates already admitted to a seat who want to switch should check the
Information Bulletin closely. Rules on seat resignation, forfeited security deposits, and debarment can bar them from this round.
Candidates who did not qualify NEET UG 2026.
Candidates who never completed the MCC process and, under that year's rules, are not allowed fresh entry. Whether fresh registration is open depends on the notice issued for this round, so read it carefully.
Candidates debarred by MCC for violating counselling rules, such as not joining after a final-round allotment.
The process follows the same online format as earlier rounds:
Registration and fee payment: Log in at mcc.nic.in and pay the registration fee and security deposit as applicable.
Choice filling: Select and prioritise colleges and courses from the seat available in this round.
Choice locking: Lock your choices before the deadline.
Seat allotment result: This result will be based on your rank, category and choice selection.
Reporting: Download your allotment letter and report to the allotted college with all documents.
Prepare these in advance, since the reporting window is short:
•NEET UG 2026 admit card and rank card
•Class 10 and 12 mark sheets.
•Category, EWS, and PwD certificate if applicable.
•Domicile certificate in state seats.
•Passport-size photographs.
•Allotment letter and fee payment receipt
•Read the Information carefully. It governs fees, deposits, and forfeiture rules, and these can change from year to year.
•Be realistic with your choices. Remaining seats are usually in lower-demand colleges or categories, but private and deemed universities may still have MBBS seats. Weigh fees and location carefully before locking.
•Don't treat the allotment as optional. Since there is no upgrade, accept a seat only if you are ready to join. Not reporting can lead to forfeiture of your deposit and possible debarment.
•Keep a backup plan. If you don't get a seat, state counselling stray rounds and options such as BDS, B.Sc. Nursing, or AYUSH courses may be worth considering.
The stray vacancy round in NEET 2026 is crucial for aspirants who haven't secured a seat. So, it is your mercy chance that can help you to get your desired destination. Success depends on being eligible, staying within the deadlines, and choosing carefully. So, stay connected with the official MCC’s website for any further information.
