NEET UG 2026: 9,911 New MBBS Seats Announced – A Big Opportunity for Medical Aspirants

A major celebration for NEET 2026 aspirants because The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given a reason by adding 9,911 new MBBS seats. In the latest seat allocation thousands of seats are added along with approval of 25 new medical colleges. This addition of seats makes the total MBBS seats 1,36,939 for academic year 2026-27 making it one of the biggest victories in recent years.

Seat Matrix at a Glance

As per NMC latest information total medical seats are split between:-

Government Medical Colleges (GMCs): 63,296 seats

Private Medical Colleges: 73,643 seats

Total seats are divided across 823 medical institutes all over the nation. This increase of 9,911 seats is an increase of 8% of seats compared to last year showing the government's consistent push to expand medical education infrastructure and address the shortage of doctors in India.

Which States Gained the Most?

In the year 2026, state-wise breakdown shows a clear leader in this year's expansion:-

Karnataka now tops the list with 15,395 total MBBS seats, the highest in the country.

Uttar Pradesh follows closely with 14,000 seats.

Tamil Nadu ranks third with 13,999 seats and also recorded the single largest increase this year, gaining 950 new seats.

On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh saw only a minor addition of one seat.

This unequal addition of seats clearly shows how seat growth varies state to state.

New Medical Colleges Driving the Growth

A major increase in seats comes from 25 newly established medical colleges. Chhattisgarh received the highest number of new government college approvals, with institutions sanctioned in many areas like Dantewada, Janjgir-Champa, Jashpur  and Manendragarh etc.

Other colleges are sanctioned in states like Andhra Pradesh, improving the medical position of the state.

So, aspirants' opportunities are opening for you to keep working and growing to become the part of 1,36,939 seats.

What This Means for NEET UG 2026 Candidates

1. More Admission Opportunities

This increase in seats increased nearly 10,000 seats. It means more aspirants can get medical colleges or MBBS seats compared to last year. This brings a sense of relief and joy among aspirants.

2. Improved Counselling Prospects

Candidates with last ranks or border ranks may get the most benefit particularly in the later rounds of All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota counselling, where additional seats often make the biggest difference in final allotments.

3. Competition Remains Intense

Aspirants must know this increase in seats is a major victory, but still the competition is intense, every year nearly 20 lakh aspirants apply, out of which seats are only 1,36,939. So, competition is still fierce. Be consistent with your studies to attain the milestone.

4. Private College Seats Growing Faster

One trend to watch is that the rate of increase in private medical college seats has outpaced that of government colleges this year. While this expands overall opportunities, it also means many of the newly added seats will come with the higher fee structures typical of private institutions.

A Word of Caution: The Matrix Is Still Provisional

All aspirants must know that NMC clarified that this new seat allocation is tentative and can be revised. Seat matrices of NEET UG have gone through drastic changes even in the past when it goes through court cases, renewals and new approvals. So, stay in touch with NMC and Medical Counselling Committee to get information about all updates.

Final Takeaway

We all know the intense competition in NEET exam, so increasing 9,911 seats and 25 medical colleges is a very wise decision. Yes, we agree that fierce hassle for top institutes will keep going, but the overall expansion particularly in states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka— thousands of students will benefit in 2026. So, aspirants have a number of hopes, and regular efforts are going to value your hard work and dedication. That's why keep working to fulfill your dream of becoming a doctor. Aspirants are advised to stay updated with MNC and MCC notifications and Sikareduhub website to get all reliable information.

NEET, one of the prestigious exams of India demands lots of hard work and once you clear the exam, the story doesn't end here as landing an MBBS seat is only half the job.
