After months of hardwork, consistency and dedication, JEE Advanced 2026 finally happened on 17th May 2026. And right after exam speculations among aspirants began- the wait for answer key has started, as answer key is the first official document that tells candidates whether an IIT seat is truly within reach.
Nearly 1.8 Lakh candidates appeared across exam centres nationwide, and every single one of them is now doing the same thing-hunting for answers, estimating scores and hoping the numbers add up. This guide gives you everything you need to know:- How the answer key process works, a full paper difficulty breakdown, subject-wise and category-wise expected cutoffs and what Sikar's top coaching institutes are predicting the morning after.
Read the below given process carefully to nicely understand how the of JEE answer key works, what steps you must follow, helping you to assess correct aggregate marks:-
IIT Roorkee, the organizing institute of JEE Advanced 2026 releases the provincial answer key nearly 7-10 days after the exam. Candidates can log into the official portal at jeeadv.ac.in, download their personalized response sheet(ORS) and compare it answer-by-answer against the provincial key.
While matching answers, candidates may find some answers challenging. Candidates who believe an answer is incorrect can raise a formal objection during the challenge window — usually a 2–3 day period — by paying a non-refundable fee per question challenged. Each challenged question will be reviewed by the team of experts from the organising IIT.
After processing the valid challenges, the final answer key is released. The result — rank list, subject-wise scores, and aggregate scores — is declared shortly after. As per past year records the result arrives within 4–5 days of the final key.
The marking criteria of the JEE Advanced exam varies from question to question, which means JEE Advanced uses a multi-type marking scheme. For Single Correct Multiple Choice questions(MCQs) 3 marks are given while wrong answers result in -1. For Multiple Select question(MSQs) 4 marks if all correct options are selected and partial marks also given depending on no. of correct option. For Numerical Value Answer(NAT) question 4 marks for correct answer and 0 for wrong(No negative marking for this section). In this way every section marking is different and knowing this scheme is essential before you calculate your expected score.
JEE Advanced paper includes Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics subjects, and their level in Paper 1 is as follows:-
|
Subject |
Questions From |
Paper Level |
|
Physics |
•Electrostatics & Capacitors •Optics •Modern Physics & Nuclear •Mechanics (Rotational + Waves) |
Tougher than 2025, slightly easier than 2024's notoriously difficult paper. |
|
Chemistry |
•Organic Chemistry •Inorganic Chemistry •Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry |
Easiest of all three subjects, provided relief to aspirants; likely to pull up aggregate scores significantly. |
|
Mathematics |
•Calculus (Differential + Integral) •Coordinate Geometry •Algebra (Matrices, Probability, Complex Numbers) •Vectors and 3D |
Mathematics lived up to its reputation as the JEE Advanced differentiator. Paper 1 Maths was tough, with several questions requiring multi-concept application — a hallmark of papers designed to separate the top 500 from the top 5,000. |
Physics
Physics Paper 2 was moderate, with a greater focus on conceptual application than Paper 1. Questions were from electromagnetic induction, AC circuits, and fluid mechanics. The paragraph-based questions were slightly longer and required careful reading — a few candidates reported spending too long on these, affecting overall time management.
Chemistry
Chemistry in Paper 2 continued its easier trend. Matching-type and list-based questions from Organic and Physical Chemistry were straightforward for students with solid NCERT groundwork.
Mathematics
Maths Paper 2 was the hardest of the entire exam. Questions were long, time-consuming and demanded precise execution over extended steps.
Based on the overall assessment of exam, here is the expected subject-wise cutoff, which students must clear to become part of rank list
|
Subject |
Expected Cutoff |
|
Physics |
10-12 marks |
|
Chemistry |
14-16 marks |
|
Mathematics |
9-11 marks |
The aggregate cutoff (out of 360 marks total across both papers) is what ultimately determines your rank. Given the moderate to tough paper, the merit will be lower than past years. Here is the expected category-wise cutoff of 17 May JEE Advanced exam:-

Sikar being powerhub of coaching institutes has nationwide recognition. Sikar has firmly established itself as one of India's premier coaching hubs by consistently producing JEE toppers. Here are top institutes views about 17 May 2026 JEE Advanced exam:-
1.Gurukripa Career Institute, Sikar
Gurukripa is one of the leading institutes of Sikar, and it was first to launch the answer key on the same exam day. Gurukripa's faculty panel assessed the overall difficulty at 7.2/10. While Chemistry offered relief, the Mathematics Paper 2 section was "among the top 3 toughest JEE Advanced Maths sections in the last decade." The institute's predicted General category aggregate cutoff stands at 95–98 marks, with subject minima at 11 (Physics), 13 (Chemistry), and 10 (Maths).
Resonance also declared its expected answer key and cutoff marks. Their faculty predicted an aggregate cutoff of 92–97 marks for the General category, slightly below Gurukripa's estimate, reasoning that the Maths sections would suppress scores enough to bring the threshold down.
Allen Career Institute raises time-management as one of the rising concerns of the 2026 exam. As Physics and mathematics questions were too long making it difficult for candidates to attempt a full paper. Allen's expected General cutoff: 94–100 marks.
To use the answer key effectively, and accurately measure the score it is necessary to follow the given tips:-
It is very important that you first download your official response sheet as it is the digital record of every bubble you filled. Don't rely on memory, check effectively by downloading ORS.
To make yourself eligible for the rank list, it is important that you must have 10% marks in every subject (Maths, Physics, Chemistry). Making it mandatory to calculate section-wise score. So, do not jump to the total as a good aggregate with one subject below the cutoff means no rank.
When checking, you may find some questions where you are unsure about your answer or the key's answer, save it for later to challenge. Don't put every question as challenging, challenge the question of which you have a clear, reasoned basis with a textbook or paper-based argument.
Before the declaration of the official key, it will be good if you check unofficial keys too. Coaching institutes release their keys early which help students to know about their score, find challenging questions. Cross-reference at least 2–3 keys. Where all agree, accept that answer. Where they differ, wait for the official key.
Q.1 Does clearing the cutoff guarantee IIT admission?
No, admission solely doesn't depend on cutoff. Clearing the cutoff puts you on the rank list. Actual admission depends on your rank, category, and seat availability during JoSAA counselling.
Q.2 What is the correct method to check the answer key of the JEE exam?
To check the JEE Advanced answer key correctly, visit the official website jeeadv.ac.in and log in using your Application Number and Date of Birth. Before comparing any answers, always download your ORS (Official Response Sheet) first — never rely on memory.
Once you have your ORS, match it carefully with the official answer key and apply the correct marking scheme for each question type, as single correct, multiple correct, and integer type questions all carry different marks and negative marking rules. If any answer is doubtful you can challenge it..
Q.3 When will the official JEE Advanced 2026 answer key be released?
Around 24-27 May the official JEE Advanced key will be released. Check jeeadv.ac.in regularly for updates.
Q.4 How much does it cost to challenge an answer?
₹200 per question is the cost to challenge any answer(non-refundable), money will only be refunded if the challenged answer will be accepted.
In conclusion, JEE Advanced 2026 was tough — but that is exactly what makes an IIT seat worth fighting for. When Maths tricked Chemistry offered relief, Physics long questions checked the analytical skills. So, overall the Paper level was moderate to tough. And right after the wait for the official key begins, the official key clarifies whether you will get a score to be in the rank list.
Till then, candidates can cross-check their answers using trusted coaching institute keys from Gurukripa Sikar, Allen, and Resonance for an early score estimate. Do not panic over a tough paper — cutoffs drop when the paper is hard, and this year is no exception.
