If you're still hunting for that MBBS or BDS seat, Round 3 of NEET UG 2026 counselling just handed you a fresh shot. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released the Round 3 seat matrix comprising clear vacancies, virtual vacancies, and newly added seats for MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing courses, with a total of 17,239 seats in the matrix. Of these, 6,703 are clear vacancy seats, 10,353 are virtual vacancy seats, and 183 are newly added seats. That virtual vacancy number is the headline-grabber — and the one candidates most often misunderstand.
This distinction can make or break your counselling strategy.
Clear vacancy — a seat that is available for allotment based on the current counselling status. In plain terms: it's vacant right now, no strings attached.
Virtual vacancy — a seat that can arise when it may become available depending on the movement of candidates during the counselling process, typically when candidates already holding those seats get upgraded to other seats.
In other words, a virtual vacancy is a conditional seat — it only opens up if the current seat-holder moves elsewhere.
Every vacancy displayed in the matrix does not necessarily mean the seat will remain available until final allotment. So when you're choice-filling, don't treat all 17,239 seats as equally "available."
Treat clear vacancies as your safer bets, and virtual vacancies as bonus possibilities layered on top.
The seat matrix is important for the choice-filling process — candidates must go through it before entering their choices each round. It's released prior to counselling and covers the overall picture for all rounds; from Round 2 onwards, it's broken down into newly added seats plus clear and virtual vacancies, and with each successive round the number of available seats keeps shrinking.
That last point is key. Round 3 is widely being called a pivotal moment this cycle — often the last realistic opportunity to secure an All India Quota (AIQ) government medical seat before the final Stray Vacancy round. If you're eyeing a government seat and haven't locked one in yet, this round deserves your full attention.
The seat matrix is available on the official MCC website, mcc.nic.in, and covers MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing seats under the 15% All India Quota, Deemed universities, central universities, ESIC institutes, and other participating colleges.
To access it:
•Visit mcc.nic.in
•Open the UG Medical Counselling section
•Select the Round 3 Seat Matrix 2026 link
•Download the relevant PDF — separate files exist for clear vacancy, virtual vacancy, and newly added seats
•Search college-wise, course-wise, and category-wise before finalising choices
Timing is everything in NEET counselling, and Round 3 is moving fast:
Registration/choice filling and locking: ongoing, with the schedule stating registration continues until September 27 and choices can be filled and locked until September 28.
Seat allotment result: scheduled to be released by MCC on September 30
Reporting to allotted institutes: candidates allotted seats in Round 3 must report to their institutes between October 1 and 9, 2026
Miss the choice-locking window, and you miss the round entirely — there's no extension for latecomers.
If you've already secured a seat you're happy with and joined it, be cautious: once you join a Round 2 allotted seat, you cannot vacate it, though you can exit with forfeiture of the security amount if you haven't yet joined. Also worth noting — candidates who have already joined up to Round 2 of AIQ or state quota become ineligible for further AIQ or state-quota rounds, so upgrading isn't always on the table once you're settled.
But if you're still without a seat, or holding one you'd genuinely trade up from, Round 3 is worth the registration effort — especially with 183 brand-new seats added on top of the existing vacancies.
And don't panic if Round 3 doesn't work out either: not receiving a seat in Round 3 doesn't mean counselling is over — MCC's schedule includes further stages, including Round 4 and Stray Vacancy-related processes.
Candidates should also keep tracking their respective state NEET UG counselling if eligible for state-quota seats.
Over 10,414 seats, split in clear and virtual vacancy. The clear vacancies are your solid ground; the virtual vacancies are worth listing generously in your choices, since candidate movement between now and allotment day could turn a "maybe" into a confirmed seat. Just don't sit on the fence — with choice-locking closing fast and allotment landing September 30, the smartest move is to check the matrix today, rank your preferences realistically, and lock in before the window shuts.

The wait is finally over, as the Medical Counselling Committee(MCC) released the result of round 1 seat allotment for which lakhs of MBBS, BDS and BSc nursing aspirants were waiting. So, now everyone has only one question:- freeze the seat, float for an upgrade, or skip it and wait for Round 2.
NEET, one of the prestigious exams of India demands lots of hard work and once you clear the exam, the story doesn't end here as landing an MBBS seat is only half the job. The rest is more important and crucial i.e locking a choice during counselling and the bond policy attached to that seat because a cheap government college can cost more than a private one if you don't know about service obligations and discontinuation penalties.
A major celebration for NEET 2026 aspirants because The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given a reason by adding 9,911 new MBBS seats. In the latest seat allocation thousands of seats are added along with approval of 25 new medical colleges. This addition of seats makes the total MBBS seats 1,36,939 for academic year 2026-27 making it one of the biggest victories in recent years.
